Castellated and Cellular Steel Beams

Learning Units: 1.0 AIA LU and 1.0 PDH

This course provides a thorough introduction to the design, cost and performance advantages of steel castellated and cellular beams. Beam attributes are explained from the perspectives of the architect, engineer, erector, and building owner.

The learning objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Understand how steel beam depth and strength can be increased while using the same amount or even a lesser amount of steel, based on the castellated beam manufacturing method.
  • Recognize and be able to discuss the intrinsic structural differences between castellated and cellular beams compared to wide-flange steel and concrete beam options.
  • Be able to discuss the specific cost and performance advantages of the castellated and cellular beam, from the perspectives of the architect, engineer, erector and building owner.
  • Become familiar with the specification criteria used for castellated and cellular beams, including the criteria for the manufacture of this type beam in AISC certified facilities.

Steel Joist and Metal Decking Design

Progressive Steel Joist and Metal Decking Design

Learning Units: 1.0 AIA LU and 1.0 PDH

This course takes a building owner’s perspective on the range of cost and performance improvements that are possible when using a more design-analytical and collaborative approach to steel joist and metal decking construction.

The learning objectives of this course are as follows:

  • Recognize and understand the steel construction process through progressive steel joist and metal decking design and implementation.
  • Describe key elements and challenges of steel joist related total-project performance including cascading costs, cost assessment and the RFI process.
  • List the fundamentals of engineering for total-project cost minimization, including tonnage reduction, deeper analysis of MEP, ESFR and joist-and-decking system design and implementation practices.
  • Discuss the features and benefits of building-information modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), for structural steel projects.
